I have taken it as a rare opportunity in life to write, compile and edit the Book namely “A Ballad of 200 Years”. It is a book depicting the song of progress & prosperity i.e. achieved during the last 200 years in Pune Cantonment from 1817 to 2017. “A Ballad of 200 Years” is in the form of Biography of the Pune Cantonment till Chapter XI. In Chapter XII we have included the achievements and activities carried out by the PCB for the betterment of the Cantonment as Smart Cantonment during the years & occasion of Bicentennial. In Chapter XIII we have visualized the road map for the 3rd century in the Pune Cantonment. Also, I would like to apologize that while designating it the biography of Pune Cantonment, it was not possible to arrange and include all events and developments taken place decade wise in a chronological manner. Broadly it covers the municipal growth of the Cantonment.
For reaching into the shell of the Cantonment it is imperative to feel the soul and soil of Pune. Going down to the history it can be gathered from various historical testament that the original name of Pune had been ‘Punyapur’ (Sacred City) being it located in the confusion of two rivers, Mutha and Mulla, no doubt the places sitting in the river bank have been gaining the spirit of holy halts. Tracing the records back to the Rashtrakuta dynasty in 8th century this region was named as ‘Punaka Vishya’. Later on in 10th century it is recorded as ‘Punaka Wadi’. After the Rashtrakuta the region was burdened with evasion, counter evasion and turmoil till the era of Shivaji Maharaj. Undoubtedly the city of Pune is having and nursing the epicenter of Maharashtrian spirit since the golden time of Shivaji Maharaj and Mother Jijabai. To that tune, the Cantonment has been the torch bearer for carrying the high zeal and gist of the soil.
